By the request of our Italian friends from Bambini Cardiopatici nel Mondo we participated in a paediatric cardiac mission at the Shisong St. Elizabeth Catholic Hospital from November 12 to 22, 2016. Shisong is placed in the North West Province of Cameroon.
After a long flight from Hamburg via Paris to Yaoundé (the major capital of Cameroon) and Douala followed by an 11 hours trip by bus to Kumbo we arrived at Shisong which is a small district of Kumbo.
Running by an Italian Christian Order this hospital is the only one in the entire country which gives children with congenital heart disease the chance for treatment.
We performed three surgeries and three interventional procedures each day by the poorest of the poor. Our little patients came with their parents from all over the country to this hospital where everything is free of charge.
This hospital is a magic and peaceful place. We felt the spiritual atmosphere which is emanating from the holy sisters who are living and working in a near community.
Many thanks to our friend Dr. Giamberti and the entire surgical and cardiological team from Milan and Rome for inviting us to be responsible for the postoperative critical care by these wonderful children. It was a great honor and pleasure to work in this unique hospital and we promised already to turn back for further missions as soon as possible.
